Top Ten Must Have's When Raising a One Year Old

I've been a mommy for over 2 years now and I can't believe my little boy has grown so fast! I use to roll my eyes when people would tell me "before you know it he'll be a teenager" and "they grow so fast!", but seriously, it's true! Now I've caught myself saying it to my friends who have had babies, yes, I have turned into "one of those people".

As my son grew through his first year I found myself testing out different products trying to figure out what works best for both me and him, and I have to tell ya, there are a lot of products out there that are truly horrible. Rather than sitting here bashing the products that we don't like, I'm going to tell you all about my absolute favorite products, my top ten of baby must haves.

10. MAM Pacifiers

There has been a lot of controversy over whether or not you should give your child a pacifier, some parents are completely against it, and others are all for it. I'm one of those parents who are all for it and let me tell you, these pacifiers have been a complete lifesaver at times. After trying many brands of pacifiers such as Nuk, Soothies, and other random ones, MAM are the only pacifiers that my son would take, making them my #1 choice for pacifiers.

When my son was about ten months, I jumped aboard the A&A train and quickly became obsessed. Before I knew it I was swimming in A&A Swaddlers, and my son didn't even need to be swaddled!! When I received my Earthy Bamboo Swaddles in the mail I couldn't believe how unbelievably soft they were, they honestly felt like silky butter. Yep, I just compared them to butter. Smooth, silky, soft, (and unlike butter) snugly. I was in love. I purchased another pack of A&A Bamboo swaddles and they just weren't the same, the print on the swaddle made them not as soft as the Earthy ones. Aden and Anais Earthy Bamboo Swaddles are a must have for us!

This is going to sound crazy, but my mom and I fell in love with and purchased this little seahorse about a year before I became pregnant. At the time of purchase, I had no intention on having a baby any time soon, I just knew that when I did I wanted them to snuggle with this little guy. When I became pregnant with my son, every night I would turn on the seahorse by squeezing its tummy, and place it on my stomach for my son to hear in the womb. The bigger he grew, the more movement I would feel when the seahorse sang to him. There has never been a night in my sons fifteen months of existence that he has not fallen asleep listing to the song that his seahorse plays. Relaxing and soothing, this little guy is a must have for all babies to enjoy. It even comes in pink for little girls!

If your child is anything like mine is, they are picky about their sippies, and it always gets thrown on the floor. My biggest pet peeve is when a sippy cup says that it is leak free, but leaks almost or just as bad as the one that I had in my cabinet to begin with. If I wanted water split all over my couch, car, or diaper bag, I would just bring a cup of water with me or an open water bottle. There are many things that I love about the Nalgene Grip N Gulp, first and foremost being that I have yet to have it leak. Second, I love that Nalgene's are nearly indestructible so when it gets thrown from the high chair or shopping cart, I feel pretty dang confident that it isn't going to break. I also love that you can take the valve out of the top so that as your child grows they are able to drink easier (so long as you trust them not to spill). These are a big must for me, I've replaced almost all of my sippy cups with Nalgenes and I recommend that you do too.

My little guy is in love with his Takealong Tunes. When he was only four month old, my mom bought him this toy because he absolutely loved to look at lights. The second he could hold things on his own without smacking himself in the face, he was all over this. When he was about seven-ish months old he taught himself how to push the button and make the toy sing to him. I literally hear the songs on this Baby Einstein toy all day every day. My son has pushed the button so many times that the sticker has almost completely worn off! For his first birthday I decided to buy him a back up, I still can't decide if that was a good idea because now he walks around the house with one in each hand going at the same time. If your child responds well to music I highly recommend the Baby Einstein Takealong Tunes, they will love it!

I made the decision to cloth diaper when my son was five months old and I was already sick of spending our hard earned money on diapers. Yes, buying diapers is one of the many expenses to raising a child, but it doesn't have to be. We dove in head first and purchased fifteen bumGenius 4.0 cloth diapers, an investment that is costly in the beginning, but overall will save hundreds. When we first started cloth diapering I had no knowledge in the subject nor did I know the difference between an all in one diaper and a pocket diaper. The 4.0's are pocket diapers, and I absolutely love them. You can add more inserts if needed for a heavy wetter and you can even take the inserts out and use it as a swim diaper. If you're thinking of cloth diapering, bumGenius is the way to go.

My Boba 3G has been one of the best gifts that I received for my son. I can't tell you how many nights my little guy refused be sat down while I tended to the house, or how many times I've had to run into a store and didn't want to deal with the stroller or shopping cart cover. My son still frequently "rides" in the Boba and I love that it allows me to be hands free without breaking my back. A family member had given me a different baby carrier that we will not mention, and I absolutely hated it. That thing killed my back after wearing my 12 pound infant in it for five minutes! Needless to say, I got rid of it as quickly as I could. With the Boba 3G I never have to worry about if my son is secure or comfortable, because he always it! I have recommended Boba to many friends and every single one of them has loved it to pieces.

I am a diaper bag hoarder. Well, I'm an all types of bag hoarder to be exact. I love bags- hand bags, diaper bags, tote bags, whatever. When first had my son, I was using a cheapy brand diaper bag that we will not mention, and needless to say it literally fell apart within a month and a half. It was horrible. A friend of mine introduced me to the world of Petunia Pickle Bottom and I have been hooked ever since. These bags cost a pretty penny, but the quality alone is well worth the price. These bags will last forever, and if anything goes wrong at all Petunia Pickle Bottom backs their product and will fix or replace the bag at no cost to you (so long as you are the original owner). The bag pictured above is a Sashay Satchel and it is a great versitile diaper bag that doesn't give off the "diaper baggy vibe". You can wear it two ways, on your shoulder or as a backpack which is so convenient if you need to be hands, er, shoulder free. Petunia Pickle Bottom offers tons of different styles, prints, and fabrics depending on your needs and personal style. I can honestly say that after owning a Petunia Pickle Bottom (or two, or three, or...okay you really don't want to know how many I own), I will never go back. A good quality bag is a must have for mommy's and daddy's alike. Click here, here, here, or here to read some reviews on the various bags I have tried out!

I learned the hard way that a good quality stroller is a must have. The Britax B-Agile is not only light weight but has a quick and simple fold/unfold, it's comfortable for your little one, and it has a great recline! It is compatible with certain infant car seats so that your B-Agile can turn into a travel system also! I absolutely adore my B-Agile and use it regularly. Check out my review here!

When I registered for baby gear during my pregnancy, I really had no one to talk to who had recently had a child and could point me in the right direction of products. When registering for a car seat I honestly had no idea what qualities to look for and I figured whatever was on the market was a safe car seat. Right? Wrong. The travel system that I had registered for and received was chosen on how much it cost rather than it's features, so needless to say when I receive it, it wasn't love.  In fact, I hated it, but being that it's all we had, I used it until it was time to switch to a convertible. After Little Mister was out of his infant car seat I had the opportunity to review a Combi Shuttle Infant Car Seat and immediately fell in love with it. It was high quality, lightweight [considering], easy to use and install, and overall just  great! It's being saved for baby #2 whenever they decide to make their debut! Broccoli and Cheese Bites - Taste Tested & Approved by Little Mister

Little Mister is one of the pickiest eaters ever. He is so hot and cold when it comes to food that everything I make him to eat is a nerve-racking experience. Will he eat it? Will he love it? Is he tired of this? I just never know.

When it comes to sweets, he's like me and has no problem devouring the whole plate of whatever sweet is put in front of him, but when it comes to healthy things and veggies….yeah right. After having a long conversation with a good friend of mine she inspired me to create a bite sized, veggie infused, muffin for Little Mister, since he loves muffins!

I searched through a few different savory muffin recipes before I decided what I would need and set off to make my own. This recipe only took me a few seconds to throw together and the result was delicious and even mom loved them too! It reminded me a lot of a quiche which I loved, but I loved it even more knowing exactly what was going in it and that Little Mister would be getting some good nutrients!

What You Need:

2 Eggs
1/2 Cup of Cheddar Cheese
1/2 Cup of Italian Bread Crumbs
1 Cup of Fresh Broccoli
Garlic Salt, to taste
Pepper, to taste

What You Need To Do:

Preheat your oven to 375* and spray your mini muffin tin with olive oil spray (or whatever cooking spray you use). Wash and chop your broccoli into small pieces. In a medium sized bowl combine your eggs and bread crumbs until it becomes dough-like. Stir in your cheese, followed by your broccoli. Add garlic salt and pepper to taste (a little bit goes a long way in this recipe).

Using a spoon, place your mixture into the muffin tin to about 3/4 of the way full. Place in oven and bake for about 10-15 minutes depending on your oven.

Once the edges of your muffins brown on the sides, remove the muffin tin from the oven and flip the muffins using a spoon. Once the muffins are flipped, place in oven and bake for another 10 minutes. This will allow the tops of your muffins to get crispier as they are face down.

Remove muffins from their tin and let cool slightly before enjoying!

These Broccoli & Cheese Bites are great for snacks or as an addition to a meal for your toddler or child! They will love the savory and cheesy taste and you will love that they're still getting nutrients and veggies! It's a win-win for mom and child!

Labor & Delivery: Hello Sweet Baby A

This part 2 of my birth story, to read part 1 click here

September 21, 2011. The day of my scheduled induction, I was giddy, anxious, nervous, and humbled all at the same time. Within the next two days (hopefully), I would be holding my sweet boy in my arms.

After 39 weeks and three days, I finally would get to meet the [little] man of my dreams. I was on cloud 9. Well, I was up until I got a call from the hospital. They were calling to inform me that they wanted to cancel my appointment for induction due to a possible nurses strike.

Are you kidding me?!

It was like someone had told me there was no Santa. I was devastated.

I asked the woman on the phone if she had spoken with my doctor and she had informed me that she had not. Furious, I hung up the phone and called my doctor. After speaking with her for several minutes, she assured me that she would call the hospital and tell them that they were not calling off the induction and that in the event of a nurses strike, if I wasn't in active labor by the next morning they would send me home.

Satisfied, I went through the rest of my day anxious and scared. My hospital bag had been packed for a few weeks but I put in the rest of my personal items and threw it in the car. I tried to distract myself by watching reruns of CSI and cleaning the house, but naturally my mind kept wandering to the fear of childbirth. I kept having to remind myself that I am strong and could get through it. When seven o'clock rolled around I was a hot mess. I was to nervous to eat and all I wanted to do was get to the hospital.

I should have eaten.

We left shortly after, knowing that we would be leaving as a couple, returning as a family.

When we arrived to the hospital at a quarter to eight I was almost shaking. I think the thing about naturally going into labor is you don't really have time to think about it whereas having an induction or a C section, you have nothing but time to think. I was excited knowing that my son would be joining us in this world and I was smiling as we entered the hospital.

We checked in and the nurse got me settled in my room. Between 8 PM and 10 PM several nurses came in and out, all of them not to thrilled that I was there. My doctor had warned me that this may happen, that the nurses at the hospital may be confused as to why she authorized the induction, but she told me to just ignore them and think of my son.

To say I dealt with some rude nurses would be an understatement.

I wasn't to happy that night. At 10:00pm they finally inserted the cream to get things started and told me to get some rest and in the morning they would start the pitocin. Mr. Hunky and I hardly slept that night and when I would finally drift to sleep I would be awoken by a nurse checking on me.

At a little before 6:00am I got up to use the restroom, then crawled back into bed to try to sleep. When I tried to roll on my right side, I felt a small pop in my womanly parts and was a little concerned. I called in the nurse and she checked me and said I was fine. She hadn't reached the door before I called her back quickly; my water started gushing and she told me the obvious- my water had broke.

Having my water break was a strange feeling.

No one had ever told me what it would feel like so when it happened it was weird. I wasn't a fan to say the least. When the nurse checked my water, she told me that there was meconium in the water (Baby A went poop!) and that when the baby was born they would need to suction his lungs to avoid infection. That piece of news scared me but I trusted the hospital staff to take care of us.

Since my water had broken, I had no risk of being sent home. Within an hour they had started me on pitocin and the waiting game had begun.

I had decided to go with getting an epidural prior to going to the hospital. My pain tolerance typically isn't very high and I honestly just wanted to have a comfortable experience. The anesthesiologist visited my room at around nine or ten am to give me my epidural. At that time I was 2CM dilated and my contractions were mild. I was pretty nervous to get an epidural because I heard that it is very painful, the needle is huge, and it can cause a great deal of pain in your spine if not done correctly, so when the anesthesiologist was prepping me for it, I was literally shaking. Thankfully, it was over in under a minute and I was able to lay down and relax.

Throughout the day I was able to doze on and off, but I was finding it increasingly difficult as my stomach grew emptier. It seemed like everyone was eating in front of me and considering I didn't have dinner the night before, or anything throughout the day, every bite my family was taking was making me grumpier! I was checked throughout the day and I was gradually increasing dilation, praying with every second that my little man would be on his way out.

Family members came in and out visiting me, wishing me luck, and telling me how excited they were. Their excitement level couldn't even touch the level of irritation that was within me with ever single tick of the clock passing and no baby in my arms.

At about ten to six a nurse came in and I was about six and a half centimeters dilated. She told me it would still be a while and to relax. At six thirty, my body was screaming at me to push so I called for the nurse and she came in telling me to relax and that I still had a while to go. After telling her twice that it was time, she checked me again, and quickly called the head nurse. Low and behold, it was time to push.

The next three and half hours were a blur.

After I had started to push my doctor arrived and took over. I was so thankful to see a familiar face and I felt calmer knowing that she would be the one delivering, guaranteed now. By the time I began pushing, my epidural had completely worn off and I felt everything. My mom was on the left of me holding my leg, Mr. Hunky in the right, and I pushed with everything that I had to get that baby out.

When the doctors told me to stop pushing and relax, I literally couldn't. My body pushed non stop, using up every ounce of energy I could give.

My right leg kept cramping and getting charlie horses which was almost more excruciating than the childbirth. All I wanted was my baby to come out. Baby A just did not want to move. I pushed for another hour before my doctor started eyeing the clock, which I knew wasn't a good sign. I mustered up all of the energy and power I could and pushed with everything that I had. Within two more contractions he was out, my sweet baby boy was born. The doctor quickly cut the cord and passed him off to the team of pediatricians standing by in the room to suction his lungs.

I was petrified and disappointed that Mr. Hunky wasn't the one to have cut the cord, and that I didn't get to hold my baby in my arms directly after he was out of the womb. I was scared for my baby, but I was also so exhausted that all I could do was lay lifelessly and watch from across the room.

Thankfully the team of pediatricians that were in the room moved quickly, suctioning Baby A's lungs, confirming that everything was ok. Within five minutes they had him in my arms.

He was perfect and I was so in love.

7 pounds, 19 1/2 inches of love was in my arms after almost ten long months. Fifteen hours of active labor, three and a half hours of delivery, and over twenty four hours of time at the hospital to bring him into the world. I was smitten, to say the least.

The doctors and nurses were wonderful, the stitched me up and sent me and my baby boy to a private room to rest. The morning would be crazy with visitors so we needed some sleep. Ironically enough, I didn't sleep. Adrenaline was still pumping and I was much to in love to close my eyes.

The nurses were wonderful and took amazing care of me. Many came in just to congratulate me on such a trying delivery. I was informed by my doctor that if Baby A hadn't come out within the next five minutes they would have pulled me into emergency C Section. I am so thankful that I didn't have to do that.

Visitors came and went, and we were finally released to go home a few days later. Mr. Hunky and I were so excited to take our son home. He drove like a grandma as I sat in the back cursing those who flew by us on the freeway. When we got home, he helped me out of the car and grabbed the carseat, then we walked through our front door as a family.

I can confidently say that being induced was the worst mistake I have made in my life. I know now that Little Mister would have come on his own, when he was ready, and that it was selfish of me to have rushed him. Being that it was my first pregnancy all I could think about was how much I wanted him out and how uncomfortable I was in those last few days. If my doctor had not been the one to deliver him, it wouldn't have been the worst thing in the world like I thought it would have been. Being induced made for a long delivery and I will never make the mistake of being induced again, unless there is a medical necessity for it. Please do not leave comments that are rude or judgmental of my decision. Thank you.

How was your labor and delivery?

Rich & Decedent Walnut Fudge

Anyone who knows me knows that I have a major sweet tooth. I love cookies, candy, cakes, ice cream… and anything else that falls under the dessert category. Knowing that the older I get the more I need to be watching what I eat, I limit myself on my sweet intake. But it's just so hard. Especially this time of year.

Chocolate is one of my go-to's for something sweet but I rarely allow myself to buy any candy aside from chocolate chips, so over the weekend when I was really craving something rich, delicious, and decedent, I knew I had to rack my brain for what I could do with the chocolate chips...

And then it hit me.

Fudge.

Over the next hour I made it my mission to find a fudge recipe that wouldn't take all day to make and that I could create with ingredients that I had in my pantry/refrigerator. I really didn't want to have to go to the store to get anything, so after reading about 15 recipes (I kid you not), I decided to just 'wing it'.

Whenever I 'wing' recipes I always get nervous waiting the final results, anticipating that moment of truth where I can either do my happy dance after creating something awesome, or where I hang my head in shame wishing that I had followed the recipe or used one.

This time my friends, I did my happy dance. Not to toot my own horn, but this fudge was dang good. So now I'm going to share it with you!

What You Need:

3 Cups of Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips
1 Can of Evaporated Milk
1 Teaspoon of Vanilla
2 Tablespoons of Butter (I used salted because that's what I had on hand)
1 Cup of Chopped Walnuts (or if you don't like walnuts, try substituting chopped pecans or almonds)

What You Need To Do:

Begin by lining an 8X8 baking pan with parchment paper, then using a large nonstick pot, begin to melt your chocolate chips over medium heat. As soon as the chocolate chips begin to melt, stir in your evaporated milk and stir constantly until all of the chocolate chips are melted. Add your butter and vanilla and continue to stir until the butter is melted. Your mixture will then begin to thicken. Quickly stir in your walnuts and pour the fudge mixture into your baking pan.

Transfer your baking pan to the refrigerator and let sit for two (2) or more hours depending on your refrigerator. If you can let it sit overnight that's even better!

Once your fudge has set, lift the parchment paper from the baking pan and cut your fudge into squares! Give a handful of fudge squares to a friend or neighbor, or eat it all for yourself!

Enjoy!

Graco FastAction Fold Jogger Click Connect Stroller Review

* I received a Graco FastAction Fold Click Connect Jogger Stroller for review in exchange for my honest thoughts and opinions*

Graco is one of the world's best known and most trusted juvenile products companies.  It started in 1942 when Russell Gray and Robert Cone formed Graco Metal Products, fabricating machine and car parts for local manufacturers for 11 years.  In 1953 Russell left leaving Robert as sole owner, which is when he decided to go into the baby-products business creating the first wind-up swing called the Swyngomatic.  The Swyngomatic was such a big hit they sold millions, becoming one of the leading manufacturers of juvenile products in the process!  From then on whatever category it entered, Graco set the standard.  While a half-century has brought many changes to Graco, the dedication and commitment to designing and manufacturing top-quality products that inspire parents and babies alike remains, and continues on.

My first experience with the Graco brand was with a Travel System that was purchased when I was pregnant with Little Miss, and has lasted me through both of my two kids! It has been a wonderful product for my family and was able to grow with both of my children along with quite a few other Graco products including a Pack N' Play, high chair, and swing.  Graco products are built to last which is why I continue to purchase them.  I never really understood the need for more than one stroller... that was until I met Alex!  Within the last year I have acquired a great selection of strollers that I love!  She has definitely turned me in to quite the stroller junkie!

Hubby and I have recently started a new workout routine and wanted to add in a little more cardio, so we started looking for a good treadmill since we didn't have a way to jog with Baby C. Until recently I didn't have a jogging stroller and jogging with a regular stroller not something I recommend, so I was beyond excited when Graco asked me to review their FastAction Fold Jogger Click Connect Stroller in Tangerine!  We could get out into the fresh air for a jog instead of doing it on a treadmill! I have loved all the Graco products I have purchased in the past and was confident I would love this as well! I couldn't wait to receive it!

When Alex and I took this out of the box it was in a few pieces and I thought it may take a while to put together, but thanks to the click connect it went together very quickly and didn't even require any tools! Together Alex and I had the stroller set up in less than five minutes and we were both so impressed with how everything clicks together perfectly.

I have to say that one of my favorite features about this stroller is how quickly and easily it opens and folds! You can do it with one hand, and it literally takes just a second.

To fold pull the strap that is located under the pocket of the seat.  Once you pull the strap the stroller folds in half and automatically locks.

One feature of the of the FastAction Fold Jogger Click Connect Stroller that moms everywhere will love is the Kickstand. The Kickstand allows the stroller to stand on its own when needed. Whether you're attempting to make space in the trunk of your car or storing it in your garage, you won't have to worry about the stroller falling over or scratching up your bumper if you were to have to lean it! I love the kickstand, Graco really thought of everything!

The FastAction Fold Jogger Click Connect Stroller has a convertible three or five point harness that grows with your child for a secure fit. When we are just out walking around Baby C prefers the 3-point harness so he has a little more freedom to move and look around, but when we are out for a jog I use the 5-point harness for keeping him a little more secure.  As your baby grows it is very easy to adjust the strap height with the shoulder harness slots.  It has a multi-position reclining seat with padding for comfort, the fabric is very easy to clean and doesn't stain easily!

What good would a jogging stroller be without great tires? The tires on this beautiful stroller are air-filled rubber tires with suspension for a smooth ride. The front tire is 12 inches in diameter and features lockable swivel wheel that provides easy transition from strolling to jogging. The back wheels are 16 inches in diameter ensuring a smooth ride on any terrain, with a reflector on each side for added visibility.  The tires are extremely easy to remove for more compact storage if needed.

When shopping for strollers I always gravitate toward the strollers that include a child's tray and I was thrilled to see that Graco's jogging stroller included one! The child's tray has 2 cup holders and is removable for easy entry and exit; you can open it from just one side or take it off completely. While putting Baby C in the stroller I like to open it from one side leaving my hands free to get him in, but I love that I can take it off completely for easy clean up!  Another great thing about the child's tray is there is a reflector on both sides for extra visibility while you're out on your jog.

When we go out on jogs, having my headphones in with some motivational songs is a must, and having a safe space for my iPhone is an even bigger must, so when I took a look at the parent tray on this stroller I was immediately in love! I honestly think this is the best parents tray I have seen! The tray has two deep cup holders that ensure your water bottles are not going to tip over when you encounter a bumpy road, a covered storage compartment that is perfect for your keys, Chapstick, or sunblock and [the best part] a smartphone and MP3 cradle! The smartphone and MP3 cradle is adjustable to the size of your phone and secures it tightly in place! Alex and I were so impressed with the smartphone and MP3 cradle that we both had to try it out!

Living in Arizona we constantly have the sun shining and it's important to have a stroller canopy that will protect Baby C from the sun. This canopy is not only large, but features a mesh peekaboo window so that you can keep on eye on your little one with out disturbing them while keeping them shaded. The canopy also has mesh siding to allow air flow through the canopy if it is a hot day!

With any stroller it is important [for us] to have an extra large storage basket with plenty of room for both mine and my two kids things. The storage on the FastAction Jogging Stroller is perfectly sized to hold everything we may need and because Little Miss normally has a thing or two that she needs for me to hold on to as well, and there is plenty of room for it all.

A great safety feature that Graco include was the tether strap located in a pocket in the basket. Safety while jogging is so important and the tether strap helps you maintain control of the stroller in the case of a fall while jogging. The tether strap has a lot of slack so that you won't feel "stuck" to your stroller and when you get into you rhythm of jogging you won't even notice that you're wearing it!

The FastAction Jogging Stroller can also be used as an "every day" travel system and accommodates all Graco Click Connect infant car seats. The stroller is designed to hold children up to 50 pounds and will last you several years with your child! The stroller itself weighs 30 pounds and has an overall height of 42 inches.

The Graco FastAction Fold Jogger Click Connect Stroller is truly a great stroller!  They have combined all of the comforts and convenience of a traditional stroller with the performance of an all-terrain jogging stroller! I would definitely recommend this jogging stroller to anyone looking for a great all around stroller that is high quality and affordable.  Graco really had the comfort of parents and baby in mind with this versatile jogging stroller!
